The estate of Streatham was part of the manor of Tooting Bec in the Middle Ages, when more hamlets grew up at separate points along the road. One of St Leonard’s finest features is the famous Streatham Window, which was designed by John Hayward and narrates the history of the Church in beautiful stained glass: a story which features a Roman settlement, the Norman Conquest (after which the church was given to the Benedictine Abbey of Bec in Normandy), and Sir John Ward, a friend of the Black Prince who built a new church.
Streatham's first parish church, St Leonard's, was founded in Saxon times but an early Tudor tower is the only remaining structure pre-dating when the body of the church was rebuilt. The mediaeval parish covered a wider area including Balham and Tooting Bec. Streatham appears in Domesday Book of as Estreham.
